What are Developmental Milestones, what is Developmental Screening, and why should I complete the ASQs?
Because the first 5 years of life are so important, we want to help you provide the best start for your child. Screening young children is an effective, efficient way to check a child’s development, help celebrate a child’s milestones, and determine whether follow-up steps are needed. Caesar Rodney School District is implementing an online screening measure, the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), to help parents see if their child is meeting developmental milestones, which are things that children can typically do by a certain age. If a child is experiencing delays, it is important to provide intervention as soon as possible. Research demonstrates that the sooner a child receives intervention, the better his or her chances are of developing age appropriate skills, and not needing remediation or special education services later in life.
The ASQ is a set of questionnaires designed for parents or caregivers to complete. There are 2 components to the ASQ: The ASQ:3 focuses on school readiness and the ASQ-SE:2 focuses on social/emotional development. Both areas of development are very important and help provide a more complete picture of how your child is developing, so we ask parents or caregivers to complete both of them.
Each family who completes the online ASQs will receive screening results and information regarding developmental milestones and activities. If a child's scores indicate a potential delay the family will be provided with additional resources and, if necessary, contact information to request additional evaluations.
